Episcopal Education

As a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, St. Luke’s affirms their definition of the mission and ministry of Episcopal schools, which states:

“Episcopal schools are created to be communities that honor, celebrate, and worship God as the center of life.  They are created to be models of God’s love and grace.  They are created to serve God in Christ in all persons, regardless of origin, background, ability, or religion.  They are created to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being.

Episcopal schools have been established not solely as communities for Christians, like a parish church, but as ecumenical and diverse ministries of educational and human formation for people of all faiths and backgrounds.  Episcopal schools are populated by a rich variety of human beings, from increasingly diverse religious, cultural, and economic backgrounds.  It is also a distinguishing characteristic of these schools that they seek to integrate religious and spiritual formation into the overall curriculum and life of each school community.  They invite all who attend and work in them both to seek clarity about their own beliefs and religions and to honor those traditions more fully and faithfully in their own lives.  Above all, Episcopal schools exist not merely to educate, but to demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings as creations of a loving, empowering God.”

St. Luke’s is a ministry of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.  The Rector and Vestry exercise a ministry of oversight along with the School’s Board of Trustees and Headmaster.  Praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, all of these work together to ensure this will be an educational home away from home for students.  St. Luke’s Episcopal School consciously addresses the growth of mind, body, and spirit, serving as a learning center for values that will enhance a child’s life.  We hope that all students, regardless of their own religious affiliations, fine their faith and understanding of God enhanced through their time at St. Luke’s.

"The early 21st century offers Episcopal schools many innovative and exciting opportunities.  With the addition of an Upper School, St. Luke’s is mindful of the long tradition within the Episcopal Church of fostering institutions of educational excellence.  St. Luke’s Episcopal School exists not merely to provide a rigorous, college preparatory education, but to demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings as creations of a loving, empowering God.  With the addition of an Upper School, the mission of St. Luke’s Episcopal School will not change.  Simply put, we are called to model God’s love and grace.”

The Rev. Ken Cumbie
Rector, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church
